Hey Thunderheads!
Here are some answers for my FAQ's
-My birthdate is 2nd of April 1984.
-I am from a town called Lucan,Co. Dublin in Ireland.
-I got a phonecall asking me to be involved with the show last summer and the rest is history! Then went straight into rehearsals in Dublin with the lads and we did the show in the Helix and recorded the DVD.
-It was fun dancing/performing with the lads, as you can imagine! Think it turned out well...
- I have been dancing for 18 years. Began Irish dancing when I was 6. Had a successful competitive career. Began performing in shows when I was 15. Toured internationally with various Irish cabaret shows, but most notably as lead dancer with 'Riverdance the show". Put my degree in English and History on hold to perform!!!
Performed throughout Russia, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Scandanavia, Asia, and North America.
Recently qualified as an Irish dancing teacher.
Any other facts that you just NEED to know, just ask and I'll see what I can do..

Re: More of Zara Irish dancing?
Hi Everyone,
I haven' t been on here for a while. It's hectic being back on the road. I am usually on my forum on http://www.zaracurtis.com most days if the internet connection allows!
Thank you for the lovely comments about more of me dancing in the show. A lot of people seem to think that 'Raggle Taggle', 'Apalacian' and the new number 'Belfast polka' would be suitable great places to have some more Irish dancing.
I am now involved in the new song 'Every breath you take' so although not Irish dancing it is another dance piece.
I would love to have more to do so you never know maybe in future shows there will be some more dance numbers.
Keep your comments and feedback coming because it's great to hear.
For all of you that have been inspired to take up dance because of the show I hope it's all going well and that you are deriving as much enjoyment out of it as I do!
It's lovely to hear all of you clapping screaming and enjoying the new set list and running order of the show and we appreciate your response.
I love your description of me as the 'official unofficial 6th member of CT' Irishjun2005!!!
Feel free to post your comments to Sharons forum.
'Zara-feet' are ready, willing and able to perform!

Also many thanks for the various presents and cards that you sent backstage to the dressing rooms, the bus and to Ireland, I really appreciate you taking the time to think of me.

Re: New Questions for Zara September 15
Hi all!
Thanks for all the questions!!! Thanks for re-posting some of my answers Darleen
My biography is on my website http://www.zaracurtis.com, in the 'About Zara' section, where you can read all about my dancing career!
I began dancing when I was 6 . I remember the day the leaflet came through the letter box about Irish dance classes starting in my area and I asked my mum to take me. No one in my family had danced as a hobby before, it was purely my idea!! I loved it immediately and my parents were very supportive, they saw I had a talent for it, so I started competing form the age of 6.
I did stop Irish dancing at one point when I was around 11, as I had younger 3 brothers, other hobbies and Irish dancing was a very demanding hobby on my whole family - I had classes at least 3 times a week and a competition every weekend
my parents brought me to which took up a lot of time!
In the next year I was in choirs, taking piano lessons and I even tried ballet. I missed Irish dancing so much I went back to classes within a year and focused on it. And I haven't regretted it since.
It is hard to make decisions about hobbies etc when you are growing up as sometimes people give up hobbies in their younger years...when your friends are out playing, or going to discos and you have dance class sometimes they feel like they're missing out so they give up they're hobby ..... I don't feel that I missed out, I think that it is brillliant to have a skill whether its dance, sport or an instrument. It's worth while to keep it up and it's great to do something you love.
Don't get me wrong- it's hard work: blisters, blood, sweat and tears but when you love it its worth it!!! I really enjoy dancing and I think that shows when I'm on stage.
I have had many great opportunities through dance so I'm glad I kept it up.
I hope this is helpful to al the aspiring dancers out there!
Best wishes,
Zara

else
Again your messages are appreciated! I'm resting up, healing as quickly as I can I hope!!!
Great to hear your stories of other peoples recoveries, I'm sure I'll be back to normal asap. It's very frustrating having to sit still as you can imagine after dancing and being very active all the time!
All of your messages cheer me up
With regards to dance shoes:
Trinitygirl
The ones I wear in 'Thats a Woman' area actually not Irish dance shoes they are character shoes, or like tap shoes. Irish dance shoes usually lace up and have a strap across the front of the foot and have a hard tip and heel which you use to make the sounds when you dance. THey wouldn't have looked too nice wiwth the dress! When I usually Irish dance, I wear Halmore hard shoes, other popular ones are Fays. It depends on what type you would like yourself. Best of luck with the classes!!

Re: Concern for Zara

My typing!!!
Hey everyone,
I just want to apologise for my many typo's here in the forum!!!!!
I type so fast and try to answer all the questions and submit the post and then see the funny spellings etc!!!!
It's only because I'm rushing trying to get the replies out to you all, so forgive my typing!!!
Zara
Re: Irish Dancing
Hi Darleen,
Thanks for the well wishes, looking forwarf to perfoming in Binghamton. Opening night will be especially exciting!!!!
I personally wear Halmore Jig shoes but there are alot of different brands out there- Fays etc... Its you own preference really. There are various differnt types of tips that give different sounds , your teacher might have a preference in what particular type you wear. When I was little there were hundreds of nails in the tips of jig shoes, but now they are made of loads of different materials- fibre glass, wood and lots of other top secret things! The thing they all have in common, as you probably know, is that they give you terrible blisters when you are breaking them in!!!!!
I am an An Comhdhail dancer and so our equivilant to the Commission World Championships is the All Ireland and International Championships.I have got first place in my solos and 5 th in the championship.I am a champion dancer, I have won the Dublin Title and always was in the top 5 in all major feiseanna. I have competed thousands of times and won hundreds of trophies, cups and medals. I have been competeing since I was 6.
Its great that you decided to take up dancing in your twenties, its a fab hobby to have, dancing puts you in good form, I find anyway!
Keep in touch everyone, Zara

Re: Post new questions for Zara here
Hi Everyone
MaureenJ thanks for the compliments!
It's great to hear you were brave and took up dancing!
WELL DONE!
It will get easier to remember the more you do it, its repetition and practice all the way I'm afraid...It'll be worth it in the end though.
There is a saying if you are doing team dances to help you remember that if you are sidesteping by your partener to change places the person on the right foot goes behind, left foot goes in front so its "right behind, left in front".
In general in all Irish dancing it's important to keep your feet turned out, and try to keep in time! Enjoy!
I'm not sure about the details of the meet and greets but I look forward to seeing you all on the tour,
Zara

Re: Post new questions for Zara here
Hi everyone
Thanks for the support and encouragement! I'm glad that you enjoyed my performance in the DVD . I'll see you in tour , not sure what my plans are for the long haul, depends on how the tour goes !
To answer some questions:
Zara means 'dawn' or 'sunrise' as far as I know. It's egyptian. My mum likes unusual names!
I actually didnt hear about the show until I got a phonecall asking me if I was interested in participating in the DVD recording! They knew of me through my other dancing performances with Riverdance. At the time I was performing lead with Riverdance in Dublin. I have been performing with them for 8 years- on the flying squad while I was in school(as my parents wanted me to finish school before i went touring fulltime!) Been 4 and a half years full time touring. Been dancing the lead role for 4 years. Toured around the States, Canada, Mexico, Asia, Europe, UK, Ireland and Russia.
I'm from Dublin.
Hmmm favourite celebs that I've met .....
Well I've been lucky to have met a few over the years-
Bono, when we danced at an event that he was speakin at in Dublin. Have a great pic with him!
Tommy Lee in Hiroshima, Japan- his band and him were staying in the same hotel as us when Riverdance toured Asia.
Various pop bands/TV celebs in Ireland and abroad that I would have performed at the same events as -
Paul O'Grady,
The Stereophonics,
Mark Owen,
Sugababes,
Jim Corr.
I've got to say hi to many people along the way!!
I really like Catherine Zeta Jones as an actress/performer. She is very talented and I was flattered to be compared to her on stage in a newspaper review of Riverdance on tour in the states! I think Angelina Jolie is very beautiful and of course everyone loves Brad Pitt!!! I love the classic actresses Maureen O Hara, Marylin Monroe and Audrey Hepburn too. I LOVE the 'Sex and the city' actresses too!!!
At the moment I am enjoying everything dance hads to offer but I would love to be a TV presenter, of course always keeping dance in my life in some way!
The lads in Celtic Thunder are fun/messers! They are really good at what they do and are going to be fun on tour I'm sure!
I most food!!! I love going out for meals with friends and family and will try nearly anything! From Italian, Indian, Chinese, Sushi, good old fish'n'chips, Irish stew or a fry I'll eat it all! Just depends what mood I'm in . I LOVE chocolate, I miss the Irish food and chocolate when I away on tour.
I get a little bit of excitement nerves just before I step on to the stage, I think its good, it means you care about what you're doing and if I stopped caring about my performance I know I shouldn't do it anymore! It's a great adreniline rush performing for soo many people and I love it.
I don't think I have too strong of an accent but I suppose to you guys I sound 'Irish'. In comparison to how the lads sound my accent would be most like Pauls, I suppose, as we are both from Dublin.
America is different from Ireland in Many ways- climate, people, scenery, culture.... I'll try and give you insight into that in my DVD I have comming soon!
Hope this sheds some light on these topics for you all! Glad you enjoyerd my peformance,
See you on tour,
Zara, xxx]
Re: Hi everyone!!

Hoping to get in a holiday or too aswell

Re: Post new questions for Zara here
Hi Everyone,
Here are a few answers for you all!!!
Hi To meg and hi to charlie!!
Melissa-Thanks you for your kind compliments, to answer your q's:
I've danced since I was 6 so it has always been a big part of my life. It's brilliant to get to work and travel with something I love.
Tour with the Guys should be eventful to say the least....
I like all good music!!! I know thats relative to the listeners taste!! I've pretty eclectic taste, bit of pop, rock, r'n'b, trad irish...... i could go on............
I will be on tour with the Guys in all the venues and cities.
I don't think its weird that Paul and Ryan fight over me in the Show because its their "characters" fightening over my "character", its all part of the show, I think it's quite funny when you know all of our real personalities....... It works well in the show and has got a really good reaction!!
Celtic thunder1, thanks! As i've said its great fun doing the CelticThunder Show, I really enjoy it.
Devon McGinty- I couldn't possibily choose one of the Guys- they all are great fun and brilliant at what they do. Don't have a crush on any of them..... Great working relationship with them all!
SL Chicago if you beat out Barack and Hillary I'll definately dance with you at your inaugaral ball!!!
Hope you are all keeping well,
See you on tour!!
Zara
Re: Zara
Thanks Brenda I'll bear that in mind!
In my spare time i like going to the gym, going out with friends, reading, listening to music etc.. Not really in to wrestling so don't have a favourite wrestler!
Sorry I have been really busy so I haven't been on here in a while but again if there are any questrions for me, post them up here and I will eventually get back to you all!

Zara- your performance in Celtic Thunder is more of what I would call "Dramatic Dance". Have you done this type of dance before? It is similar to what you might find in theatre.....If this is the first time you have done this to a big audience, let me say you were Great!I loved the facial expressions and looks between you, Paul, Ryan, and the cellist..Good Job!
May Celtic Thunder have a long run!Fred F

Fred- I haven't done anything so theatrical before, although facial expressions and head and hand movements were a part of my role in Riverdance.
Chel-There will be some other women on tour I'm sure, but I'm used to being around lads, I've got 3 brothers... Zara Curtis

Hi Zara! You are so beautiful and talented! I enjoy how your talent merges so well with the guys' singing and characterizations. Are you trained in any other areas of dance, such as ballroom or ballet? And, please forgive my ignorance here- what is the correct name for the kind of dancing you do in That's a Woman and Riverdance? And is there any significance to not using your arms and hands? Do you have plans for using your new certification? OK- no more interrogation! Thanks! Chicago Chel

So glad you enjoyed the show! I am primarliy trained in Irish dance- that is irish step dancing, both soft shoe and hard shoe -traditional irish dance is what Riverdance and the rhythmic bit I do in 'Thats a woman' is based on. I love all kinds of dancing, have tried ballet, hip hop and bits and pieces of other forms of dance at different stages but Irish dance is what I have been doing since I was 6! I would love to do ballroom too - like dancing with the stars!I think it is soo beautiful to watch.Zara Curtis

to watch Ryan and Paul watching you when you tour!) I know that the show is actually longer than the dvd.
Can I hope that we will be able to see more of your dancing on the tour? I've got my fingers crossed!dee24

Zara, Not a question just a very funny thing (involving Dance)that happened in Sligo '06. My wife, Son, and I were on "an Irish Bus Tour" with our church. Long story short (I hope) A group of Irish dancers got off a bus at the hotel, To Dance at a Wedding, we were leaving to go downtown. Upon returning from downtown, the Dancers were outfront again waiting for there bus. My wife and I started talking with them. They stated they were second overall champions in all Ireland. AGES about 6-13 They gave us a little dance the next thing I know my wife is out there with them and some (not all) are doing the MACARENIA Not sure I spelled it right but it was funny watching the kids and my wife doing the Macarenia in the Irish Celtic Dance clothes. I wish I had my camera at that moment.

Zara we all love your Dancing. I was thinking maybe once in a while you could give us little tips on Dancing. For instance I know how to do ONE dance and just to show you what I mean I will now give the instructions on how to do that dance.
Now, first you put your two knees
Close up tight.
Then you sway it to the left
Then you sway it to the right.
Step around the floor kind of nice and light
Then you twist around and twist around
With all of your might.
Stretch your lovin' arms straight out in space
Then you do the eagle rock with style and grace.
Swing your foot way round and bring it back
Now that's what I call ballin' the jack!
(Zara this was all in fun and hope you got a kick out of it.) irishinjun2005

Good luck with the Irish dance. My daughter took this. I belong to a clogging group and it is so much fun. I just graduated to "intermediate" and am actually choreographing a song! I find myself tapping around all the time. Zara is a true inspiration. I hope we get to see more of her dancing at the live concert, though I know it's really "about the guys". But she is a joy to watch.BibiLuv

Zara I am sure everyone asks you about your Dancing and it truly is lovely but I thought I might ask you a bit about Zara the everyday person. Do you like to cook? Do you have any Irish recipes to share? Do you like animals? and if so what kind?

Hi Zara,
I understand that your dancing career has taken you to quite a few places. Where is your favorite place in the world that you have already visited? Of the places that you have not been to, is there one place that you always wanted to see?
By the way, you are astonishingly beautiful and amazingly talented. Congratulations on your success!

Hi Zara, I hope you're doing well today. Just curious, what kind of workout regimen do you follow in order to stay in shape for dancing (or is rehearsing enough of a workout?).LynnLynn

Hi Zara!
I just want to start by saying how talented I think you are...I've been dancing for 15 years now, and I would kill to be able to dance like that (but then, I'm a Highland dancer and the closest I've ever come to Irish is French Canadian step dancing...)
But here's my question. I have serious problems with my feet (I have really bad bunions and ever since I almost tore my Achilles a few years back my left foot has been a little weak), and I'm always really stiff and sore after I dance. I ice my feet and stretch, but I was wondering if there was anything else you would reccomend?
Thanks!

Hey Everyone!!!
Sorry to have left these questoins unanswered for so long!
Icing and stretching and making sure you warm up and cool down properly are imperative. I stand in big buckets of ice after dancing with Riverdance and it prevents inflamation. Also wearing footpads to cushion your toes or the balls of your feet help too. Hope that helps you.
I didn't get a say in my wardrobe in the show but i really liked what i got to wear! A fabulous Irish designer- Synan O Mahony designed the dresses.
Role models....?!!! Well not one "famous" person in particular, I always emulated classy, glamouros, intelligent people. Really looked up to my mum, and always wanted to be good at whatever i did!
Fitness regime- well i dont have a particular regular regime. When I'm on the road with Riverdance we do 8 shows every week so that in itself is enough but when I'm at home sometimes I do spinning, go walking , do pilates or yoga. Depends on my scheduele. I realy like bikram yoga(- yoga in a hot room)
Favourite cookie? I LOVE CHOCOLATE!!
I love music and would love to be as confident of my singing as my dancing but I am not near the lads calibre of singing I used to be in choirs growing up and used to play the piano but dancing took precedence!
My favourite colour is purple.
I have been very lucky to have performed all over the world. Some of my favourite places I have visited are Tokyo, New York, London, LA, Seville, Prague, Zurich, St. Moritz(Switzerland), Paris, Hamburg and Berlin. Climbing the Pyramids in Mexico was amazing! There have been many other interesting locations like Moscow ( it was freezing there we performed in the Kremlin when it was January!!) Places I have yet to visit are Italy, New Zealand, Austailia.....
Well there are more but they are the top of my list at the mo!! Looking forward to seeing some familiar and new places in the states on tour!
I don't really cook to much!! If I do its pasta, salads(cook?!!! I know) or meat and potatoes.... I do like animals though, we have a golden retriever here at home who is gorgeous.
I am one of 4 children, I am the oldest and have 3 brother. One of them plays guitar and one of them does Irish dancing too but all 3 are very sporty.
Hope that answers your quetions! Thanks for the compliments, interest and kind words
Any more questions just ask !!!

Carmel
I would say give it a try!! If you have dance experience that's great, though you could try Irish dance without any other experience. Modern is very differnt to Irish, Irish all about the footwork, foot placement, posture but don't go in to the class thinbking its too difficult! Just give it a try and you might learn to love it!
Re: Daily Questions April 10
Hey
Whats friday??
Yes I was involved in a few other show, not as big a scale as Riverdance but good starting points and experience for me when I was younger. I was in Celtic Rhythm, in Silver Dollar City in Branson, whenI was 15/16. I toured the states with Traditional Irish Caberets for a couple of months every year from when I was 16 to 19 . I danced in Jurys Irish Caberet in Dublin for 6 months all before I started to tour full time with Riverdance.
Most memorable performance.... I'll get back to you, this will be a long response!
Embarrassing/memorable things- There have been many!!I will elaborate later, im goin between disscussion board and here so i'll be back!
Re: HEY ZARA!!!!!
Hey Thunderheads!!
Some more answers for you :
Beth W- It wasn't my idea to kiss or slap!! Seemingly the song called for it!...
The choreographer came up with the moves which she thought corrosponded best with the lyrics and the emotion of the song. It was very different to other roles I have performed, more theatrical, but it was fine doing the act with the lads, not akward or anything. We all get on great.
Emily- I have an Irish accent but nothing like Damians
. I think you would all find me pretty easy to understand. Damian, Ryan and Keith have Northern Accents, George has a Scottish Accent and Paul and I would have similar accents because I am from Dublin too. I think its pretty neutral but I suppose I'm just used to it!
Re: Zara
Hey People
Some answers!
Well...
evilbunny-The last move?! It wasn't too hard to perfect. It was funny the first couple of times we did it because you have to get the tension in the arms right between both of us, all my body weight is on one of my arms and one of Ryans so there were a few loss of balance etc
But when it was recorded in the show was the easiest it had been, went really well.
Thank you Suern- I saw the pics, they look really good, Jack and Kathleen- the photographers , have a great eye for catching the movement.
Re: Zara
Well It seems you haev a captive audience for your writing, there seems to be a lot of fans
!!! It's great!! amazing response so far. Looking forward to the shows- the audiences should be fab!
Re: Daily Questions April 8 2008
Hi Sprig
So nice to hear form you!! I enjoyed readin gyour comment.
!!!!
It's great to hear the reaction of people when they see the show
Tell Mariah I said HI!!
And i'm very flattered that your friends 13 yr rocker old son thinks I'm 'hot' and is expanding his musical horizons
Re: Hello
Hey Alicia and Brittany
Glad to hear you enjoyed the show! Didn't know it would have this much of an effect on people but so glad it does!!!
It;s lovely tyo hear from you all.
Yes Irish dancing is really popular worlwid, like Irish music. There was even a guy from Tokyo that performed with us when I was there with Riverdacne and there have been a Mexican guy and an Israeli guy who were inspired by Riverdance , took up Irish dance, studied it intently and got to be in the show!!!
The Celtic Goddess' Immortal Words
Hi Bookreader and celticgirl
Well Irish dacning is quite a difficult discipline but it is great fun and like anything, when you love it you don't think its hard to do!!!
The main difference between it and tap is that Irish is very controlled, feet have to be turned out and crossed at all times, no gaps between the knees etc. Hands by your sides, Back straight, all emphasis on the footwork. Tap is much more relaxed and the feet can be straight sometimes an dyour posture can vary.
The actual sound of the beats is very similar, if not the same, but the method is different!
Hope that sheds some light on it for you.
You both should definately try it to see if you like it:)
Re: Some questions and a Hello
Hey Kayla Michelle
Well first of all thanks for the compliments! Glad you enjoyed the show and my performance. The guys were a pleasure to work with, it was fun!
THE SLAP WAS REAL!!! Just so you know
All in the name of art!!! I had to slap him every time we rehearsed it too.....poor Ryan!
Re: Hello
Yes you're right it is called Irish step dancing. I started taking classes when I was 6, immediately fell in love with it and was winning competitions within a few months! At this stage I've been dancing for 18 years. Now it is a popular past time for people of any age to do to keep fit and make friends so if you'd like to take it up I'd recommend it! There are Irish dance classes all over the world now becase the dance shows (Riverdance etc) have made it popular. They are even in places as far flung as Japan, Mexico and Russia!!!
Re: The Zara FAQ
The clogging was interesting! I had never seen it done before, we don't have it here in Ireland. I didn't clog, I was the lead Irish dancer there but we did a finale piece with them. We used to teach eachother steps backstage though!!
Re: HEY ZARA!!!!!
Thanks Jojo
....
The board IS time consuming!! Like a part time job, haha!!! But it is hilarious at times too. You Thunderheads crack me up!
Pauls kisses me in 'Thats a woman' and I slap Ryan in 'Heartbreaker'- but its ALL IN THE NAM OF ART!!!
Any other burning quetions that you need to know the answer to , just ask..
Re: The Zara FAQ
I was not performing with Riverdance in Silver Dollar city, I was performing with another Irish show. There was Irish dancers, american cloggers, an irish traditional band and an american band. I didn't start touring fill time with Riverdance until I was 19 so it wasn't me you saw performing with Riverdance in 2000. I have pretty much danced throughout most of America at this stage!
